More about the year 1983
Martina Navrátilová rules the world of tennis – in 1983 she
notches up 72 victories and looks down pensively from the throne:
“If every step in every direction only leads down, then you’ve
reached the top. It’s time to retire.” Instead of hanging her
racket up, she comfortably beats Frenchwoman Catherine Tanvier
in the final. Burned out, Tracy Austin on the other hand announces
her retirement aged only 20. The tournament enjoys a record
attendance – over 16,000 fans. Dieter Fischer however has to
put up with some criticism – there is a danger that the “family
party for the world’s top players” is being turned into a show
for the high society. The popping of too many champagne corks
is not in keeping with the local Swabian character of the tournament.
It’s agreed that Filderkraut - sauerkraut - is also
a delicacy.
